There is a distinct lack of writers on Tumblr

There’s such a distinct lack of text content on Tumblr that breaks even 100 words in a post, it’s pretty sad. I’m sure there are some fantastic writers out there, some fantastic thinkers too but where is their representation?

As I write this there are 1.2 million Tumblelogs, with “writer” being the ninth most popular tag and “writing” being the 18th most popular tag. That means there are a significant amount of writers on here, correct?

Nope.

The most popular Tumblelog classified under “writer” has three pictures of Miley Cyrus on its first page and a total of one hundred and forty three words. To anyone who writes significant amounts on Tumblr, like myself, frankly that is pretty insulting.

In a world where newspapers are folding due to distinct lack of funding, subscribers and new favor of online-only content, Tumblr is the perfect platform for writers: You write, you build a following, an audience, and anytime you publish you automatically have a group that auto-subscribes to your content with the possibility of reaching further once they choose to reblog and comment.

Tumblr, support your writers. Help add a text element to this picture-heavy platform that we have here.

Vegetarianism as a Sometimes Thing:

The idea that occurred to me was: What if a group of people collectively signed a contract that said one of them would be vegetarian everyday of the year? More specifically, say a group of 7 people signed a contract saying that each of them would go meatless on an assigned day each week. Thus, within the group each member could eat meat 6 days a week, but there would be one vegetarian at all times. The group could be 7 good friends, or it could be 7 individuals matched by the “commitment store.” And of course 7 is an arbitrary number - more ambitious folks could form a team of 2 or 3.

The effect may seem marginal, but I have seen tons of sources which say that just a bit less meat consumption could have immense environmental benefits. Here is one: According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads.

This is a really interesting idea and something I’d be happy to get involved with. My girlfriend has been a vegetarian for over three years now and we cook some delicious vegetarian things together.

Being a vegetarian doesn’t mean that you have to eat carrots and lettuce as every meal, it just means that you don’t eat meat. As obvious of a statement as that last sentence was, it needs to be said because the idea of not eating meat, the idea of the vegetarian lifestyle, scares some people. Pasta is vegetarian, so is cheese pizza, fruit salad and risotto, dishes that you may eat every day or at least weekly

If I found a group where each person was willing to give up meat for a day per week, I’d gladly jump on board. Here’s an example of a vegetarian day for me:

Breakfast: Cereal with Yogurt on the side and a cup of Orange Juice
Lunch: Pizza from a local shop
Dinner: Sun-dried tomato Risotto (substitute the chicken broth)

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good chicken sandwich or cheeseburger but I could give meat up for a day per week.

How do you start to get rid of these things?

Get some sort of external storage. The basement, a small rental storage unit, your parents’ place, or New Jersey. The less convenient it is to access, the better.

Put nearly everything you own there. Leave out only what you’d pack if you were going on a trip for 2 weeks.

From that point forward, remove only what you need, as you need it, from storage. You’ll almost never need to do this.

After a year, get rid of everything that’s still in storage.

I’ve been writing a lot of new songs over the past couple weeks and I’m excited to announce two EPs that will hopefully be out shortly. I wrote eight songs and arranged them into two four-song EPs entitled Songs About Baltimore and Songs About Jersey.

Kerouac - On The Road

this is the book that I’ve read the most times. I think Dharma Bums is a better novel, but you can’t get around how good this book is.

this is the recent publication of the original, unedited scroll - and I saw the actual scroll on its tour earlier this year, in Dublin.

I’m reading this now. The cover on this one is a lot cooler than mine. Mine’s my girlfriend’s Dad’s copy. It was printed in 1958.

Wednesday Slump

I’ve always been a firm believer, looking into other people’s bad days and downward spirals, that it’s all in your head, that anyone can overcome it and escape the bad luck and the slumps if they just get their head in the right place.

It’s been a few months since I’ve felt like the world was taking punches but today was one of those days. Nothing could really go right and I couldn’t get my head in the right place or pull myself out. That being said, Wednesday’s almost over.

I’m going to go read and play guitar and listen to the great sad music that you guys have recommended to me. Thanks again for helping me get through the day.

I totaled my computer. I couldn’t tell you how, but I was informed by Apple technical support today that the cost of repairing my iMac that automatically turns off whenever I’m doing something important costs more to repair than it’s actually worth.

It has been turning off on me automatically since I first got it in October of 2007. I figured it was a software bug and left it to future updates but Apple says it’s the logic board or the internal power supply, the thing that connects the power chord from the outside to the electronics inside.

Regardless of what it is, this thing is totaled. I took it in for a look, they ran it for days and found nothing. I told them that the problem only manifests itself when you’re doing something important like paying bills online or writing and iPhone app. They ran it with the CPU at 100%, every application open and nothing happened.

I’m done. I quit. This iMac is going in the garbage and whatever computer I get next is going to have an eternity and a half of Apple Care, just in case.
