Four Things Every Tumblelog Needs

1. A means of contact - It sucks when someone posts something that you really like and you can’t get a hold of them. If you don’t want to reblog it because it’s way too long or doesn’t fit the style of your website but still want to thank the person who contributed and can’t, everyone needs to offer some means of contact for their dedicated followers.

2. Original content - What’s the point in having or maintaining a website when all of your content is a steady stream of other people’s original content. I come to your site because I want to see what you have to say, not what I’ve already read on the Internet’s most popular sites. Don’t just reblog every headline from Digg. Write something passionate, take some pictures, record and post a funny video. Do something to show who you are, someone other than a news wire.

3. Readable content - Because no one wants to strain their eyes to see what you have to say.

4. A “Go To Top” Link - For the visitors that don’t want to keep reading back into the history of your Tumblelog but want to get to the top of your page quickly and easily to follow you, please, please, provide a simple link that takes readers to the top, fast. It’s a nice gesture to save your readers’ time.

3. Maus by Art Spiegelman- A classic graphic novel that many people have told me i need to read. Someday i’ll get around to it.

Maus was possibly the worst graphic novel I’ve read. I had to read it for school so I couldn’t even get out of it, really. I’ve only read a few but boy was it bad. If you’re expecting some kind of daring escape from a Nazi concentration camp don’t waste your time. If you’re looking for the story of an old man hiding in places without the suspense of The Diary of Anne Frank, by all means pick up Maus.

I read the first Sandman, Preludes and Nocturnes, and it was decent. Weird, but decent.

If Hunter S. Thompson were alive right now he would have torn this administration apart years ago. If he had been buried in a coffin he’d be banging on the top for someone to let him out. It’s too bad his days are well and gone.

What we need right now is for someone to revive the media. To revive it back to what it used to be: a body of journalists who weren’t afraid to get shed light on the darkest secrets of American companies and politics. Journalists used to bring down politicians for more than having sex with an intern. They used to stand in the light and point out every crime that administrations like Nixon’s committed.

It’s too bad those days are gone. It’s too bad that in these times companies that are powerful enough, would hire someone to shut you up, to get rid of you. We need people to do more than join Facebook groups in outrage. We need people to start speaking up again, to start calling out the people that are commiting the worst crimes in the name of our country right in front of our eyes.

People shouldn’t be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people.
