Does Baltimore City Still Roar? Part 1

Tonight I had the opportunity and honor of meeting Less Than Jake’s drummer Vinnie for a pre-show interview. We talked a lot about their future as a band, where they are now owning one hundred percent of all that they do, and about a few secrets hidden in their new album, GNV FLA.

After interviewing Vinnie, I went into the venue and sat through the hell that were the opening bands. Suburban Legends are an Asian-American ska band of gimmicks. Half of their songs are choreographed so they play and dance and sing. It was awful. After the Legends came Westbound Train, a band that couldn’t keep time and had no sound whatsoever. They sounded like Dispatch meets Bob Marley meets a bunch of 14 year olds in their grandmother’s garage. Listening to them was like being raped in the ear. Awful.

Then came the light at the end of the tunnel: Goldinger and Less Than Jake. Goldfinger played an incredible set. Half of it I knew, half of it I didn’t. They played the staples: Superman, 99 Red Balloons, and Spokesman plus some new and some old. All in all it was a great set with a great crowd.

At the end, Goldfinger’s drummer got some fan to eat half of a Twinkie out of his ass. I wanted to throw up watching that.

Less Than Jake came next, that comes in Part Two tomorrow.
